If you wish to enter the UK as a spouse or another family member, you must first apply for entry clearance. You must be able to meet the financial, accommodation and English requirements.

To enter the UK with a spouse/marriage visa you must satisfy the following requirements:-

  • You must have met each other and be legally married.
  • You must intend to live together permanently.
  • Although permitted to work, you must be able to financially maintain yourself and any dependents without claiming public funds.
  • Your sponsoring partner must earn more than £18,600 per year or have enough savings to be able to sponsor you. The minimum financial requirement is higher if also sponsoring dependant non-British children.
  • There must be suitable accommodation for you, your spouse and any dependants without overcrowding.

Spouse visas are granted for 33 months after which an extension must be applied for. Upon completion of 5 years, spouses are eligble to apply for permanent residence.

To extend a spouse visa under the 5 year route in the UK, you and your sponsor must continue to satisfy all of the above requirements. In addition however, your income can be added to your sponsor's in order to meet the financial requirement. You are also required to obtain a Level A2 English qualification from an approved test provider.
